5 Signs Your AC Needs Repair Before the Orlando Summer Heat Hits

Orlando summers are no joke. From June through September, heat indexes routinely top 105°F, and even overnight temperatures rarely dip below 75°F. If your air conditioner is struggling, you’ll find out fast — and the worst time to discover a problem is when it’s 98 degrees outside and your system quits entirely.

At 4 Seasons Air Conditioning, we’ve been keeping Central Florida families comfortable for over 70 years. Here are the five warning signs that your AC needs attention before peak cooling season arrives.

Warm or Inconsistent Air Coming from Your Vents

If you’re getting lukewarm air from your vents — or rooms that used to cool quickly now take forever — your system is telling you something is wrong. Low refrigerant, a failing compressor, or a dirty evaporator coil can all cause reduced cooling capacity. In a home with an older system, this often means it’s working twice as hard to deliver half the cooling, which spikes your OUC or Duke Energy bill dramatically.

Strange Noises You’ve Never Heard Before

A healthy air conditioner runs relatively quietly. If you’re hearing grinding, squealing, banging, or rattling sounds, those are red flags. Grinding often indicates worn motor bearings. Squealing can mean a slipping belt or motor issue. Banging suggests something loose inside the unit — a problem that will get worse fast. Don’t wait these out.

Your Energy Bills Are Climbing Without Explanation

If your utility bill from OUC jumps 20–30% compared to the same month last year — and you haven’t changed your habits or thermostat settings — your AC system is working harder than it should. Dirty coils, a clogged air filter, low refrigerant, and aging components all cause efficiency losses that show up directly on your energy bill.

Humidity Feels High Inside the House

Central Florida is naturally humid, but a properly functioning air conditioner should be removing moisture from your indoor air. If your home feels muggy or clammy even when the AC is running, the system may be undersized for your home, or there could be problems with the evaporator coil or refrigerant charge. High indoor humidity also creates conditions where mold and mildew can take hold in ductwork.

The System Is Short-Cycling or Running Constantly

Short-cycling means your AC is turning on and off repeatedly in short bursts rather than running full cycles. This is hard on the compressor and usually indicates a refrigerant leak, an oversized system, or a failing capacitor. On the flip side, if your system runs constantly without ever reaching your set temperature on a mild day, that’s also a sign of trouble. Either pattern causes excessive wear and inflated energy costs.

What to Do Next

If you’re seeing one or more of these signs, schedule a diagnostic inspection before summer. A tune-up and refrigerant check now is far less expensive than an emergency repair call in July — and certainly less costly than a full system replacement that could have been avoided.
