How to Lower Your Energy Bills This Summer in Central Florida

Summer in Central Florida is long, hot, and relentless. From late May through September, daily high temperatures regularly exceed 92°F with heat indexes often topping 105°F. That means your air conditioner is running nearly around the clock — and your energy bill reflects it. OUC customers and Duke Energy Florida customers throughout the Orlando area commonly see residential electric bills of $250–$400 per month during peak summer.

The good news: there’s a meaningful gap between what most homes pay and what they could pay with a few adjustments. Here’s how to close that gap.

Start with Your Thermostat Settings

Every degree you raise your thermostat in summer saves roughly 3–5% on cooling costs. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 78°F when home and 85°F or off when away. For most Central Florida homeowners, 78°F is achievable with ceiling fans helping distribute the conditioned air — fans create a wind-chill effect that makes 78°F feel like 74–75°F.

If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, set it to begin cooling down about 30 minutes before you typically arrive home rather than leaving it at 78°F all day. Pre-programming saves money while ensuring you’re not walking into a hot house.

Control Solar Heat Gain Through Windows

In Central Florida, windows are your home’s biggest vulnerability in summer. South- and west-facing windows in the afternoon hours allow intense direct sunlight to heat your home’s interior, forcing the AC to work harder. Cellular shades, blackout curtains, or reflective window film on these windows can reduce solar heat gain by 40–70%.

Even inexpensive alternatives help — closing blinds or curtains on the sunny side of the house during peak afternoon hours (roughly 1–6 PM) is free and significantly reduces the load on your AC.

Get Your Air Ducts in Order

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the average home loses 20–30% of conditioned air through duct leaks. In a Central Florida home with ductwork in the attic — where attic temperatures regularly reach 130–150°F in summer — even small duct leaks mean you’re paying to cool your attic. A duct inspection and sealing can have a very short payback period in our climate.

Signs of significant duct leakage include rooms that are significantly hotter than others, high utility bills despite a seemingly efficient system, and an attic that feels noticeably cool or conditioned (which means your ducts are leaking conditioned air into it).

Reduce Internal Heat Sources

Your home generates heat from within — lights, appliances, cooking, electronics. In summer, minimizing these internal heat sources directly reduces the load on your AC.

Practical steps: cook outdoors or use a microwave/slow cooker instead of the oven; run your dishwasher, dryer, and other heat-generating appliances in the evening or at night rather than midday; replace any remaining incandescent bulbs with LEDs; and make sure your refrigerator coils are clean (a refrigerator that’s working hard generates significant heat).

Schedule a Pre-Summer HVAC Tune-Up

A dirty evaporator coil reduces your system’s efficiency by 15–25%. Low refrigerant forces the system to run longer cycles. A failing capacitor causes the compressor to start inefficiently. All of these issues are invisible to the homeowner but show up clearly on the utility bill. An annual tune-up before peak season ensures your system is operating at its rated efficiency rather than working against itself.
