What is Short-Cycling in a Furnace?

Short cycling in a furnace occurs when the unit turns on and on off too frequently. This causes it to become inefficient in heating your home properly. With winter rapidly approaching, residents here in the central Orlando area are going to want to make sure that their homes are nice and warm. Our local, HVAC repair specialists deal with this issue regularly this time of year. Here are a few of the reasons that you may be dealing with it in your home:

Your Furnace is Too Big

If the unit heating your home is too larger, this means that it heats your home too quickly, causing it to shut off quickly as well. If this is a new problem with a furnace that has been working properly until recently, this is most likely not the reason.

It Has a Dirty Air Filter

It is important to make sure that you regularly check your air filter to make sure that it is still in good shape. Our Central Florida HVAC technicians recommend doing this once a month, in addition to changing them at the manufacturer’s suggested time.

The Thermostat is Not Working Properly

Another problem could be the thermostat. A qualified furnace repair specialist can check it for loose wiring or other mechanical issues it may be having. Also, the placement of your thermostat may also be the cause. If it’s in the sun it may read warmer than what the room actually is, causing the furnace to shut off prematurely.

Flame Sensor Corrosion or Objects Lodged in Vents

While this is probably the least likely cause for the short-cycling in your furnace, it still happens from time to time. Regardless of the specific reasons you may be dealing with this, the next step is bringing in an expert to take care of it.
