How Important is the SEER Rating When Purchasing a New AC?

Now that spring is approaching and the weather is getting warmer, it’s time to assess your air conditioner. Spring is the perfect time to have your AC unit replaced, right before the hotter summer months arrive.

If you are planning on upgrading to a new air conditioner and have been doing your research, you might have come across discussions regarding SEER ratings. A question we often get is, “Is it better to get an AC with a higher SEER rating?”

Here in Orlando, where it’s hot and humid for most of the year, a higher SEER rating can actually provide better indoor comfort year-round.

Higher SEER Ratings and Two-Stage Air Conditioners

Most air conditioners with SEER ratings of 17 and above feature two-stage technology and variable speed fans. This means they can run for longer on a lower setting, which allows you to enjoy comfortable indoor temperatures without the higher energy bills.

Two-stage air conditioners also come with additional benefits:

  • Improved moisture control— Since the AC runs for a longer amount of time between cycles, it also provides better dehumidification. This is a major benefit for homeowners in Orlando!
  • Less hot or cold spots— When you had your old AC, did you often experience inconsistent temperatures in different rooms? Two-stage units deliver more consistent cooling throughout your home and can help eliminate hot or cold spots.

Which SEER is Best for Your Home?

The answer will depend on your particular indoor comfort needs and preferences.

In Florida, air conditioners are required to be at least 14 SEER. But higher ratings—18 SEER and above—are often recommended since we are in such a hot and humid climate. Air conditioners with higher SEER ratings are typically more efficient and are able to deliver greater comfort.

However, every household will have different cooling needs and demands. There is no “best” or “right” SEER for everyone.

Your Orlando HVAC professional will be able to help you determine the best SEER for your home based on your needs and budget. They can also help you compare the different options and estimate potential savings over time.

How to Keep Your AC Running at Peak Efficiency

It’s important to keep in mind that the SEER rating is how efficient your AC unit can be , considering all other aspects of your HVAC system (ductwork and AC size) are at peak, optimal levels. But in most cases, they’re not. This is why SEER is just one of the things you should be looking at during your search for a new AC.

The most important factor to consider is the quality of installation. A poorly installed AC unit will develop problems early on and fail much sooner than expected. This is why it’s important to work with the right Orlando HVAC contractor when it comes to AC installation or replacement. Look for a licensed professional with a proven track record of successful equipment installations.

Another often overlooked but essential element to AC efficiency is maintenance. Annual inspections and tune-ups are recommended. Work with a reliable HVAC contractor who offers annual maintenance plans. Regular system check ups can help you avoid more serious problems and extend the life of your AC unit.
